A Person Who Asks (For Alms) Whereas he Has What is Sufficient

The poor person who is contented with what suffices for his daily sustenance and protects his honour by refraining from asking people and does not humble himself to anyone, is better than the one who asks the people, resorts and complains to them of his poverty and need.

What is even worse is for someone to seek help and solicit other people while he has with him what is sufficent for him in his clothing, food and drink. The Prophet salla alayhi wa sallam has warned against this behaviour. He said,

He who begs (from people) while he has what suffices him will come on the Day of Resurrection with scrapes, scratches, or lancerations on his face. He was asked, what constitutes suffciency, Messenger of Allah salla alayhi wa sallam? He replied, It is fifty dirhams or its value in gold.
