Frightening from the Fire
The Messenger of Allah salla alayhi wa sallam used to recount the attributes of the Fire as an intimidation from entering it and incitement to be saved from it. He usedto supplicate to be saved from it. In fact, much of the Prophet´s supplication used to be:
´´O Allah, grant us good in the world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the Fire.´´73
The Companions have described this; ´Adiyy Ibn Haatim narrated:
The Prophet salla alayhi wa sallam mentioned the (Hell) Fire and sought refuge (with Allah) from it, and turned his face to the other side. He mentioned the (Hell) Fire again and tok refuge (with Allah) from it and turned his face to the other side. The Prophet salla alayhi wa sallam then said:
´´(O people) Save yourselves from the Fire even if with one half of a date fruit (given in charity), and if this is not avaliable, then (save yourselves) by saying a good plesant friendly word.´´´74
I heard the Prophet salla alayhi wa sallam say, while he was delivering a sermon: ´ I warn you of the Fire! I warn you of the Fire! I warn you of the Fire!´ and he did not cease to repeat that such that if he was at my (current) position, the people of the market would hear him and he would continue until the cloak he was wearning feel to his feet.´´75
